A Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to all of you.

Can you Help? :- I am going to give you some time scales and you will see why we are asking for your help: Work parties take place between 15th March – 15th June which gives us in a good year 10 days of working parties. (Bank Holidays etc) bear with me. Growing Season, April to October. This gives us in a normal year, over 200 days of growing. (Those gardeners among us will know that 2010 was an even longer growing season) as you can see from that during June and July the lake and complex look spot on, but then it begins to look untidy. If any of you feel you can give us some time to do a bit of Hedge Cutting, Strimming, Weeding or any other odd jobs that crop up from time to time, please can you contact Alex at the lake on Tuesdays and Thursdays any help will be welcomed.
Memorial Seats:- Around the lake we have a number of these, which add to the overall look of the lake. Some of them are in need of repair and a coat of Varnish/ wood treatment. Alex has repaired one and refurbished another of these seats. If you have had a seat erected for a family member or friend please can you ensure that this year it is appropriately maintained.
Child Safety.
It has been brought to the attention of the Committee, that some anglers are bringing their children with them, when fishing a match, and allowing them to wander around the complex by themselves. This is completely unsafe as gates are left open during a match and anybody can come in. Junior section no longer exists due to Child Protection Issues and is therefore also unfair on any adults working or fishing at the time. Please ensure that children sit with you at all times and are escorted to the toilet facilities. This is for their safety and our peace of mind.
KILLER SHRIMP!
OK this next item has given me quite a dilemma and after reading and re reading it I am still not 100% sure that Alex isn’t winding me up, but here goes:- Killer Shrimp (Dikerogammarus villosus) was found at Grafham Water reservoir in Cambridgeshire. This is the first time this species has been found in British waters.
The shrimp can grow to 3cm in length, much larger than our native species. It often has striped or spotted markings and its mandibles (Jaw) are relatively large. It kills a range of native species often leaving them uneaten. The Environment Agency is asking for our help to prevent the spread of this invasive species by following some simple measures:-
Anglers please ensure that your nets and equipment are dry and that they have been thoroughly cleaned since last used; in particular we would ask you to visually check for any signs of the shrimp. If you think you have found one please check with identification details on http://www.nonnativespecies.org. Images of suspected non-native shrimp can be sent to alert_nonnative@ceh.ac.uk. Please also notify a committee member who will then follow the correct procedure.
TABLE TOP SALES.
Denise Royal and Ann Hyndman will be doing a number of Fund Raising sales for HELP for HEROES and Leavesden Green ARMY CADET DETACHMENT. Please watch for notices. Donations always welcome for these charities.
